Can You Imagine Sending Your Child to School Without a Backpack?

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

Classic Caring Hearts empowers women and supports their children going back to school

Imagine for just a minute, it's July and the summer is coming to an end. A new school year will start soon. Parents have been working all summer to pay the bills and the kids have been running around the neighborhood enjoying life with a childlike wonder adults' envy. After working all summer and spending little time with your kids it's time to go back to school shopping. You receive an email from your child's school with a list of supplies they will need for the upcoming school year and your heart sinks. You don't have enough money to pay the electricity and buy groceries let alone purchase back to school supplies and a backpack. You have no other choice but to send your child to school without the basic necessities.

According to Family Giving Tree, "A backpack offers another means of personal storage and allows the student to keep their school supplies together and in order. It offers a sense of control and security."

Wake County Public School System

There are approximately 157,673 students in Wake County Public Schools. 43,892 of those students are in the free and reduced-price lunch program. That is more than a quarter of students who can't afford lunch every day. According to the News & Observer, more than 4,000 students in Wake County are homeless. Classic Caring Hearts is fundraising for a backpack drive that will provide students with new backpacks filled with school supplies to ease the burden of back-to-school cost on families and set students up for a successful school year.
